Anti-depressant

An agent that elevates mood in order to treat depression. Common pharmaceuticals include SSRIs (fluoxetine/Prozac, paroxetine/Paxil, sertraline/Zoloft), and tricyclics such as amitriptyline/Elavil); MAO-inibitors (Marplan, Nardil) have been used in the past, but have dangerous side-effects when taken with tyramine-containing foods [ORWJr].
